“The Meeting” is a beautiful oil painting on canvas by Ambrogio Antonio Alciati (1878-1929), painted in 1918 and housed in the Museo del Paesaggio, Verbania. The painter portrays a desired and voluptuous kiss even in the presence of a physical barrier, an iron gate, which keeps the bodies of the two lovers separate. The theme belongs to the Scapigliatura genre, of which his mentor Tranquillo Cremona was an exponent. The two lovers cling passionately like ivy to the railing that the woman, with her arm stretched upwards, seems to want to overcome. The brush strokes are vibrant and fluffy while the green of the garden dominates the scene.
