Medusa is a painting, made in about 1597 by Caravaggio and housed at the Uffizi of Florence. It is a canvas oil mounted on a poplar wood, 60×55 cm in size and a reputable sage of the painter’s optical capabilities, which can undo the effects of the convexity of the support. Caravaggio does not represent Perseus’s killing of Medusa, but her head just cut, with blood flowing and her mouth wide open in the curve. The hallucinated eyes, the wrinkle tension of the forehead, the wide mouth that shows the teeth and the dark background of the interior, are exalted by the hot and sudden light. The light also highlights the horror produced by the hair of snakes.
